This blog began as Kevin’s personal StarCraft blog. For the first year of this blog’s existence, it was mostly short posts about things learned while playing. Just around the release of HotS, however, he posted a few build orders for each race, and this drew a tremendous amount of traffic.
Shortly afterwards, we launched Spawning Tool, a site that automatically extracts build orders from replays and offers a variety of analysis tools. More and more of the blog’s content shifted towards Spawning Tool development and analysis derived from the site data, to the point where it eventually made sense to swap the site as being the official Spawning Tool blog.
Our goal is to bring a quantitative approach to watching and playing StarCraft. Especially with the wealth of data in replays, there’s the opportunity to understand the game at a different level by aggregating data and picking out trends.
Hi Kevin,
I just wanted to say i like your blog and thanks for the detailed HOTS build orders. I placed most of them on our build strategy site and referenced your blog for source. You’re more than welcome to join our community:) I look forward to more updates!
I’m glad the blog was useful to you. I’ll check out your community when I get a chance. Let me know if there’s anything specific you would like to see more of on the site or if there’s anything you would like me to contribute to your community. I would be happy to help out.
Just found this blog through r/starcraft
Love the content so far, looking forward to much more. Keep up the great work!
En Taro, Tassadar!
Hi Kevin,
I just found this blog, by coincidence actually. I wanna say that i think it’s an absolutely great blog! What has helped me the most, are all the different builds and openings that you have posted. I’m a protoss player, currently at platinum – hoping to reach diamond 🙂
Keep up the good work!!
Thanks for the comment, kim! I’m glad that the openings were useful to you. For me, having that structure around a game really helped for me to refocus on my mechanics and feel like I had a grasp on the flow of the game. Let me know if you have any suggestions for content or notice any mistakes.
I really love your Terran builds and that this blog really helps set up beginners. I’m still a starter edition player and I think it would be awesome if you would add some macro and micro tips.
Yay! I’m glad you found the site useful and even more glad that you’re getting into the game!
I did a writeup of some basic mechanics on http://starcraft.kevinleung.com/?page_id=454. Are there any parts of it that I can expand on or add in? I’m thinking maybe I should add a bit more high-level thinking there.
Great job guys.
You should include a disqus system for comments.
Cheers!
Hey Spawning Tool developers,
I am an grad student working in ecology and I’m interested in using Starcraft analytics to test certain ecological theory. I have been able to do some cool work already using the build orders extracted from replays that are posted on your site but I’d like more information, specifically about the loss of units and structures through time, which I know your kit has no problem extracting, as I see evidence of the data’s existence on the website. Is it possible that you can help me get at this data through Spawning Tool or give me any info about how Spawning Tool does what it does so that I can try to the data myself? Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
